Does Businesses Still Need Website Developers in the AI Era?

Website development has been getting easier and easier every year.

A few years ago, building a website meant writing code for almost everything. Every page, every button, every design element had to be coded manually. It was difficult and time-consuming, and most businesses had no choice but to hire developers.

Then came the drag-and-drop era.

Tools like WordPress page builders, Wix, Shopify, and many others made website creation much easier. People could create beautiful websites without writing much code. Over time these tools became more powerful and allowed users to build modern and professional-looking websites.

And now we have entered the AI era.

Today, AI can generate websites in minutes. From design to content to coding, many things can be done automatically. Hosting providers and website builders are also making the process simpler than ever. In some cases, a website can be created and published with just a few clicks.

So the big question is:

Can a normal person build a website without any development knowledge?

My answer is: Yes, but only to a certain level.

A person with basic tech knowledge can create a simple website today. They may need to read some documentation, watch a few videos, or spend some time learning the platform, but it is definitely possible.

However, things become different when the website gets bigger.

What if the website needs custom features?

What if it needs to handle thousands of visitors?

What if it requires APIs, databases, payment gateways, automations, security, performance optimization, or complex user experiences?

At that point, knowledge becomes very important.

Building a high-level website is not just about generating pages. It requires understanding databases, APIs, hosting, security, UX, SEO, performance, scalability, and many other technical areas.

This is where developers still play a major role.

AI is an amazing tool, but AI works best when guided by someone who knows what they are doing. A skilled developer knows how to give the right instructions, make the right decisions, spot problems, and create solutions when things don’t work as expected.

Because of AI, developers can now build websites much faster than before. What once required a team of several people can sometimes be done by one skilled developer using AI tools.

So yes, AI will reduce some of the demand for website developers.

Businesses no longer need to hire developers just to create a very basic website. Many people can do that themselves now.

But for serious business websites, custom systems, large traffic websites, and advanced functionality, developers are still needed.

I don’t think website developers will completely disappear.

Instead, their role is changing.

In the past, businesses needed a whole team.

Today, they may only need one good developer with AI.

And in the future, businesses will still need someone they can rely on, someone who understands the technology, manages the website, solves problems, and makes the right technical decisions.

AI is making website development easier.

It is not replacing developers completely.

It is making good developers even more powerful.
